The Civil Rights campaigner, the Reverend Willie Taplin-Barrow, has died. She was 90. Willie was not only the godmother of the current U.S. President, Barack Obama, she was also the mother of the late Soul Singer, Keith Barrow (who recorded ‘You Know You Want To Be Loved’).She was nicknamed ‘The Little Warrior’, due to the fact she was only, just, 5 feet in height.Born in Burton, Texas, to Nelson and Octavia Taplin, Willie was one of a large family. She had six brothers and sisters. Willie began her Civil Rights campaigning at a very early age, organising protests regarding the lack of bus transport for black students, who were made to walk to school, whilst the White kids were allowed to ride. As a teenager, she relocated to Portland, Oregon, in order to study at the Warner-Pacific Theological Seminary. Willie went on to work with other African American residents in Portland who combined to create one of the first black Churches of God. In 1943, Willie joined the National Urban League. In 1945, she joined the National Council of Negro Women. During World War 2, Willie took on a role as a welder at the Kaiser shipyards in Swan Island, Washington. It was there where she met, her soon to be, husband Clyde Barrow (the two were married for 56 years). more at soulwalking.co.uk

Marvin Gaye's Family Speak Out On $7 Million 'Blurred Lines' Verdict; Find Fault in Another Pharrell Song. Not only is Robin Thicke’s lawyer appealing the verdict, which says Robin and Pharrell must pay the Gaye family over $7 million, the Gayes are still side-eyeing Pharrell. Marvin Gaye’s family (Gaye’s son Marvin Gaye III, daughter, Nona, and ex-wife, Janis) spoke with Entertainment Tonight about the verdict. During the interview, they mentioned they agree with people who say Pharrell’s biggest hit “Happy” resembles the late singer’s 1966 song “Ain’t That Peculiar.” “I’m not going to lie. I do think they sound alike,” claimed Nona admitted. But they don’t plan on coming after Pharrell with another lawsuit; they just want to bask in their legal win. “We’re just in the moment today and we’re satisfied,” Janis said. Or maybe is it because it wasn’t Marvin Gaye who wrote “Ain’t That Peculiar,” but rather Smokey Robinson is responsible for the #1 Motown single?  (singersroom)

Gap Band's Biography:
The Gap Band, centered around brothers Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert Wilson, toiled in obscurity for several years prior to becoming one of the most popular funk groups of the late '70s and 1980s. The Tulsa, OK natives produced 15 Top Ten R&B singles ranging from ferocious funk anthems to gorgeous slow jams. Many of their hits, such as "Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)" and "You Dropped a Bomb on Me," featured instantly memorable, rippling synthesizer basslines. All of them featured Charlie's deep, invigorating lead vocals. While casual R&B fans and most critics associate the Gap Band with the early '80s, the Wilsons' run of hits spanned nearly 20 years, from 1977 through 1995. More here

Debora Cox is to play Josephine Baker in A Broadway Musical. She’s been cast as the legendary entertainer Josephine Baker in the musical “Josephine,” inspired by Stephen Papich’s book “Remembering Josephine,” which is about the life of Baker between the years 1939-1945. “Josephine” will be directed and produced by Tony Award-winner Kenneth Waissman and will premiere sometime in April. According to a press release, the musical “will revolve around Baker’s stint as the star of the Folies Bergere in Paris between 1939-45, her scandalous affair with Swedish Crown Prince Gustav VI, and her heroic service in the French Resistance during World War II.

” Waissman adds, “For a number of years, I had been intrigued with the idea of recreating the glamorous and exotic world of Josephine Baker in a stage musical. She was a larger than life African-American expatriate who transcended her color, her gender and her times. Her exotic looks, fabulous gowns and feathered headdresses, her obsession with her royal lover and her life-risking exploits in the French underground during WWII provide the sex, romance and intrigue of this original new musical.” Cox is a Broadway veteran; she’s been cast as Aida and as Lucy in the 2013 revival of Jekyll & Hyde. Chi-Lites Biography:

In the 60s, Smokey Robinson virtually reinvented the sweet soul ballad and paved the way for a number of groups that would make the early 70s a ballad lovers dream era. And no act epitomized that genre more than this hard working group from Chicago with an underappreciated musical genius at the helm. Like many popular soul groups of the 60s and 70s, the Chi-Lites found each other as teens, singing together and apart in various groups in their native Chicago until joining together as the Hi-Lites in the mid 60s. By the time they signed with the local Brunswick label in the late 60s, they had added a "C" and become the Chi-Lites. The Chi-Lites marriage with Brunswick bore fruit quickly, as they had their first R&B hit in 1968 with the sweet ballad, "Give It Away." More at

J. Blackfoot's biography:
John Colbert was born in Greenville, Mississippi, moving as a child to Memphis, Tennessee with his family. Generally known as "J." or "Jay", he acquired the nickname "Blackfoot" as a child, for his habit of walking barefoot on the tarred sidewalks. In 1965, while spending some time in Tennessee State Penitentiary in Nashville for car theft, he met Johnny Bragg, the founder of the Prisonaires vocal group. After leaving prison, Colbert recorded a single under his own name for the small Sur-Speed label, before returning to Memphis. There he was heard singing in a street corner group by David Porter of Stax Records. After the plane crash that claimed the lives of Otis Redding and four members of The Bar-Kays, Colbert joined the reconstituted group as lead singer, and performed with them for several months, but did not record.

In 1968, after Sam & Dave had moved from Stax to Atlantic Records, Porter and his songwriting and production partner Isaac Hayes decided to put together a new vocal group of two men and two women. They recruited Blackfoot, together with Norman West, Anita Louis, and Shelbra Bennett, to form The Soul Children. Between 1968 and 1978, The Soul Children had 15 hits on the R&B chart, including three that crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100, and recorded seven albums. more at wiki

Maureen Reillette "Rebbie" Brown (née Jackson; born May 29, 1950) is an American singer professionally known as Rebbie Jackson /ˈriːbi. Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, she is the eldest child of the Jackson family of musicians. She first performed on stage with her siblings during shows in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in 1974, before subsequently appearing in the television series The Jacksons. Her sister La Toya was born on Jackson's 6th birthday. At age 34, Jackson released her debut album Centipede (1984). Following a 10-year hiatus in her musical career, Jackson returned with the 1998 album Yours Faithfully. It also featured contributions from her children. In 2011, Rebbie embarked on the "Pick Up the Phone Tour," which is dedicated to teens who have committed suicide all over the U.S. (wiki-15)

In the news  ... Soulful songstress Ledisi is one of the most underrated talents in R&B music today. Most recently she can be seen acting as Gospel great Mahalia Jackson in the film Selma, where she sings “Take My Hand, Precious Lord.” In 2014 she released her sixth studio album The Truth, and this month she will kick off her “Intimate Truth Tour” on February 27 in Los Angeles. In promotion of the tour and her new The Intimate Truth EP (released in January which reworked songs from her last album), the singer has premiered an acoustic in-studio performance visual of her song “Rock With You.” The video, directed by Ron T. Young, shows how Ledisi is in full control when she’s recording. She tells Billboard that the clip “shows who I am as a live performer and how I record in the studio without direction from a producer.” Like all the R&B greats, she has a strong rapport with her band. Ledisi and Young wanted to “capture the essence of how it feels when musicians and artists interact in the studio.”  ThisIsR&B

Are Beyonce and Jay Z Planning to Work With Ed Sheeran on Duet Album? While attending the recent Grammy Awards, hit producer Detail told Billboard, "me, Beyonce and Jay Z are actually doing something together this year." Confirming the possible album, he closed with, "My imaginary mind, I will work to say it's true." Although the power couple has yet to confirm the duet project, all signs are pointing to a solid answer. The latest clue came on Tuesday (Feb. 10), following Beyonce and Ed Sheeran’s surprise duet performance during the taping of ‘Stevie Wonder: Songs In The Key Of Life – An All-Star GRAMMY Salute,’ on February 10th. After the show, the UK singer, songwriter, and musician joined Beyonce and Jay Z for dinner. Now, we’re not mind readers, but with this kind of synergy, music had to be one of the topics of discussion. (singersroom)

Dionne Warwick rushed to hospital ... It’s been a difficult 2015 for the family of the late Whitney Houston. Just one week prior to the singer’s daughter being found unconscious in a bathtub, her cousin Dionne Warwick had a bad fall in the shower, TMZ reports. According to the celebrity website, the accident occurred on Jan. 24 in Warwick’s New Jersey home — 911 was called at 10:19AM. The 911 call for Bobbi Kristina came seven days after, at 10:25AM, making the similarities in both cases eerie. The 74-year-old songwriter was taken to a nearby hospital, and immediately had surgery on her ankle. She was released two weeks after. If Warwick’s accident wasn’t enough for her to handle, she also has to deal with Bobbi Kristina’s tragic situation. According to HollywoodLife.com, the ‘Walk on By’ singer is taking it very hard. “Dionne is inconsolable over this situation and she has been on her knees for days, begging for Bobbi Kristina to pull through,” revealed a source of the website. “She has gone through this before with Whitney and it nearly killed her. To think Bobbi Kristina won’t make it through will rip poor Dionne to shreds.” more at boombox

L.J. Reynold's biography:
Vocalist L.J. Reynolds hovered on the edge of stardom in the '80s, but never made the major single or album he needed to explode as a solo artist. Reynolds had some good singles in the early '60s, when he was recording for Tri-Spin as Larry "Chubby" Reynolds. He moved to Mainstream in 1969, then was lead vocalist for The Relations in 1970. After cutting singles for several small independents and landing one Law-ton single in the R&B Top 30 ("Let One Hurt Do" in 1971), Reynolds replaced William Howard in The Dramatics in 1973, remaining with them until 1980. He then signed a solo deal with Capitol, and his LPs were frequently well received, but never sold very well. Only the song "Touch Down" among his many Capitol releases ever reached the R&B Top 30. Reynolds rejoined The Dramatics in 1986. Since the recent death of Ron Banks, LJ is now the lead singer with the surviving Dramatics group in 2015.

In the news...Bobbi Kristina Brown, the daughter of R&B crooner Bobby Brown and late singer Whitney Houston, was discovered unresponsive in a bathtub in her Georgia home Saturday morning, according to reports. Bobbi was found by her husband, Nick Gordon, and a friend, who performed CPR until police and rescue arrived at the home, north of Atlanta, at 10:25 a.m. and performed "life-saving measures." She was taken to the nearby North Fulton Hospital after being resuscitated. The incident is under investigation. The horrific moment comes two weeks before the third anniversary of Whitney Houston's death, who, on Feb. 11, 2012, was found in a bathtub in a Beverly Hills, California hotel. According to CBS 46 Atlanta, the fiancée claimed Norman allegedly choked her with a scarf, punched her, and shoved her engagement ring down her throat…Yikes… Police reports state that Norman allegedly then broke her cell phone and took her car keys so she couldn’t call for help or leave. New music for 2015 .....  I don’t know what accounts for the nine years that lapsed between Carol Riddick’s stunning debut, Moments Like This, and her excellent follow up, Love Phases. But then too, I kinda do. It’s probably the story of funding issues and life issues. But mainly funding, or trying to muster up enough cash to ensure that Love Phases is a record that conforms to the Philly native’s creative vision. Admittedly, I’m just speculating.

Listening back to her 2006 roll out, I’m sure that plenty of Riddick fans expended all the patience that they could muster as they waited for the sequel, and their patience has been rewarded with the solid sophomore effort, Love Phases. This new project reveals that Riddick possessed the confidence in her ability as an artist to make the kind of subtle yet noticeable changes that always carry the risk of alienating long-time fans without any assurance that she will be able to replace them with new ones. Jarrod Lawson Biography:

Jarrod’s first memories were made exploring his own father’s recording studio in Redwood City, California—the family residence at the time. His parents still declare that it was never difficult to find young Jarrod; just follow the sound of humming or drumming. At two years of age, Jarrod had found his way to the drum-kit which created in him a highly rhythmic sensibility that can be witnessed in his keyboard playing to this day. His profound ability at bass support creates a rhythm section of his left hand alone. In a trio setting with guitar and drums, it was once remarked that the band needed no bass player as “a bassist would just get in Jarrod’s way.”  Sometime around the age of eight years old, the Lawson family moved to a farmstead south of Portland, Oregon. In that open vista—away from neighbors and city distractions—Jarrod explored his father’s record collection and found treasure in the recordings of Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. These two giants would inspire and inform Jarrod’s own development as a singer and songwriter of soul music. As he explored the magnificent harmonies of soul, a fascination and near-obsession with the piano blossomed when Jarrod was only 13 years old. More his web site
